What is pick and pack?

Pick and pack is the process of selecting an ordered item from storage, checking it, then packing and labelling it ready for a courier to collect. It’s the physical core of ecommerce order fulfilment: whatever platform an order comes from, it still has to be picked off a shelf and packed correctly before it can ship.

If you’re newer to outsourcing fulfilment generally, our guide on what ecommerce fulfilment involves covers the basics.

Our pick and pack process

Once your stock arrives from your suppliers or manufacturers, it’s booked into our system on receipt, typically within around 24 hours, with goods barcoded where required and quality-checked as they come in.

It’s then given a stock location in our Nottingham warehouse, held in our storage system alongside everything else we hold for you. If stock arrives on pallets rather than in smaller consignments, our pallet storage page covers that intake route specifically.

From there, every order follows the same sequence:

  1. An order comes in and is picked from its location, scanned to confirm it’s the right item.
  2. The order is packed, scanned again, and check-weighed to confirm the contents match what should be inside.
  3. The package is labelled and photographed before it leaves the building.
  4. It’s handed over to the courier or postage company chosen for the order, ready for shipping.

That’s the same pick, pack and ship process behind every order we fulfil, whichever platform it came from. Get a free quote if you’d like this priced out for your own stock.

Our Pick and Pack Warehouse UK

Storeship’s pick and pack warehouse is based in Nottingham. Every order that passes through it is scanned at pick, scanned and check-weighed at pack, then photographed before dispatch: the same three-stage check referenced across our site.

Running pick and pack yourself means taking on a few things most sellers don’t budget for until they’re already behind:

Running it yourself Using Storeship
Scanning and barcoding equipment Buy and maintain your own Included
Staff Hire, train and manage warehouse staff Included
Software License and set up your own stock and order software Free, included as standard
Pricing model Fixed costs regardless of order volume Quoted for your order volume

Our stock management system and the checks above come as standard, not an add-on.

Accuracy, checks and packaging

Every order goes through the same three-stage check: scanned at pick, scanned and check-weighed at pack, with photographic evidence of the final packed parcel before it leaves our warehouse.

You choose the packaging we use for your orders: a box, a bubble wrap envelope or a mailing bag. See our Green Fulfilment page for our approach to packaging waste.

Pick and pack across your platforms

The process above is the same whichever platform your orders come from. We fulfil orders from Amazon, Shopify, eBay, WooCommerce, TikTok Shop, Etsy and BigCommerce, and a dedicated Amazon FBA Prep service for stock going into Amazon’s own network rather than shipped direct to your customers.

If you’re newer to selling online or still working out what volume looks like, our page for lower-volume sellers covers what to expect.

Why sellers choose Storeship for pick and pack fulfilment
